Ventfree Gas Fireplaces and Safety

The ventfree (or ventless) gas fireplace is becoming more popular, and is an alternative option to the traditional fireplaces that require venting. There are, however, a number of concerns about the safety of ventfree fireplaces. These concerns include an oxygen depletion in the home, as well as carbon monoxide poisoning, and the buildup of moisture.

What can be done to improve safety?

To improve safety, in the early 1980s, manufacturers of ventree gas fireplaces have adopted a safety technology.

What is this safety technology?

This technology is called an "Oxygen Detection Safety-pilot," or simply an ODS. The ODS can detect when oxygen levels are low and will automatically shut off the flame and the pilot.

What does this do?

The ventfree fireplace will not be operational until the area in the home is properly ventilated.

Is there a track record for ODS?

The ODS technology originated in Europe, where it has been used safely for more than a half a century.

Can I buy this type of fireplace in any state?

Due to safety concerns, not all states permit the use of ventfree gas fireplaces - check before you buy. If you have the option and chose to buy one, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for use and heed all safety instructions and warnings.

Safety Reminder - The same basic safety rules apply for using a ventfree gas fireplace as they do when using a vented fireplace.

1 - never leave the ventree free gas fireplace unattended

2 - children should not be allowed to operate the fireplace

3 - and be sure to install smoke and gas detectors.

Seems to be quite popular these. I suppose if I bought a new home I'd go ahead an enjoy it.

Thanks for the information about new safety features. That is what I will be sure to look for. EPA-certified.

Thanks a million and rated up!
